GCSE results - another leap forward for Brighton & Hove
There has been a further leap forward in GCSE results in Brighton & Hove's state schools this year, with provisional results up by more than 3% overall.
This success follows outstanding results this year in Brighton & Hove at Key Stage 2, and is in the context of a reported decline nationally in higher grade GCSEs.
The percentage of pupils achieving the benchmark 5 x A*-C results including English and maths has risen from 52.8% in 2011 to around 56% in 2012. This improvement follows a rise of nearly 4 percentage points last year.
This year's results are the first since a Secondary Commission formed last year by the council from local and national education experts advised on how to improve performance.
The council has backed the city's secondary schools partnership this year with £350,000 as well as secondments of expert staff. There has been an increased focus on schools working together on improving teaching, especially in the core subjects of English, maths and science.
The chair of the council's children and young people committee, Councillor Sue Shanks, said: "We're now seeing year on year rises in performance at all levels, from early years through Key Stage 2 and GCSEs to A-levels.
"Our teachers have been willing to try new strategies to secure improvements in pupil performance, and I'd like to thank them for their hard work and the flexibility they have shown. I would like to particularly congratulate staff and students at Hove Park for the exceptional progress they have shown this year.
"There is clear evidence that the strategies we have put in place to improve results are paying off and that schools have risen to the challenge of improving performance. But there is still a way to go before we're delivering the outstanding education in all our schools that residents deserve."
