Visit West Blatchington Windmill
Open from May - September on Sundays and Bank Holidays
2.30pm - 5pm
Take the family to this beautiful traditional windmill just on the outskirts of Brighton & Hove. This unusual 6-sided windmill, with attached barn, offers interest for the whole family, and is regarded as one of the finest mill museums in the country.
Learn about milling and agricultural history, and follow a range of displays up five floors to the top of the windmill, following the course of the mill's mechanisms, which would once have turned grain into flour. See if you can spot the millers cat and the naughty rat on the way!
Find out how simple ancient milling techniques developed into windmill technology, and discover how the entire milling process was powered by man and the natural forces of wind and gravity. Have a go yourself at milling grain on a set of quern stones and spot the unusual ‘A' frame which supports the upright shaft, built from old ships' timbers; plus take part in the West Blatchington Windmill Quiz as you journey through the mill. The mill dates from c 18.20 and is a Grade II listed building; it is suitable for all ages, although upper floors are accessed via steep steps.
